We knew that we wanted to de-carbonize and move from our natural gas fueled furnace and hot water tank to more efficient and environmental systems, but were completely stalled trying to navigate the various rebates, and comparing complex mechanical equipment options.

We worked with Liam Butters from the Home Energy Navigator program and he was a life saver! So knowledgeable, personable and patient. He explained the various rebates we could apply for, and answered our questions as we went through the various stages of the rebate program. He explained the pros and cons of various systems and quotes we received. He gave us the confidence to move forward and we are very happy with our heat pump and electric hot water system.

We officially cut off our natural gas supply to our property and we feel more comfortable thermally, but also in regards to indoor air quality and our footprint on the environment.

I am very pleased with the help received from Home Energy Navigator. I was walked through the whole process and now enjoy a much more energy efficient home, at a surprisingly low end-cost to me. My heating bills for this winter are a fraction of what they were last year; and it is lovely to wake up in the morning to a warm house. This coming summer I will find the air cooling a great benefit too. Overall a very worthwhile experience. Many thanks!

We originally changed from oil to gas over 20 years ago and found great improvements in air quality and efficiency. This latest change to a new generation heat pump is another order of magnitude in improvement to year-round comfort, air quality, efficiency and reduced GHG emissions. Our family has noticed an immediate improvement in air quality and comfort throughout the house. The District of Central Saanich is exemplary in their leadership with the promotion of climate change mitigation for residents. The cost of this transition is minimized with the generous grants from federal and provincial agencies. Operating costs are also minimized with the efficiency of this technology.

I had just moved to Central Saanich and was reviewing the community newsletter when I saw a notice regarding switching from oil furnaces to a heat pump.  I’ve had my heat pump for a year now and I have noticed a real drop in my energy consumption and really appreciate the climate friendliness of the heat pump

Shelley and Gurdave Sundher, Central Saanich

We’ve had our heat pump for a little under a year now and really appreciate the efficient heating and cooling it provides. In addition to improving the comfort of our home, we also feel good about how much easier our heat pump is on the environment compared to heating and cooling systems that use fossil fuels.

In 2021 we decided to install solar panels… Since the install, we only pay B.C. Hydro’s $13 bi-monthly administration fee, instead of $150–$200 per month. That’s a pretty good return on $25K, plus we expect to recover that amount upon the eventual sale of our home. Then the summer heat waves came & we were miserable without air conditioning. So we decided to install a heat pump and take advantage of the federal & provincial grants and zero-interest loan, which our Hydro savings pay. Set it & forget it…..we love it! Our house is a cool haven in the summer & a cozy nest in the winter, even in -10C weather. We couldn’t be happier.

We consider ourselves pretty tech savvy, but we ran into a few snags in the Greener Homes Grant process and the Energy Concierge came to the rescue. We are very grateful for their help and support to get through it successfully.

Michael Radcliffe, Oak Bay

The Energy Concierge was most helpful in our transition from electric baseboard heating to a mini-split heat pump. Our conversations with the concierge were able to assist us in choosing the correct machine for our situation. We felt that the advice was unbiased and impartial.

The best outcome for our situation was the priority. Nothing was being sold or promoted other than energy efficiency. We are very pleased with the performance of our heat pump both for heating and cooling. We have not got our winter Hydro bill yet but based on our daily consumption it looks like we will be saving money as well as improved comfort. A very positive experience!

Shortly after moving into our home in 2022, we decided to upgrade our electrical service so we could accommodate a new mini-split heat pump system and solar panel (PV) array.   These upgrades lowered our energy bill considerably, improved the comfort of our home and reduced our EnerGuide rating from 90 to 20 gigajoules (GJ) /year!   We took advantage of the multiple rebates that were available to make the cost of the project more affordable

We have had the heat pump for one winter and our tenants could not be happier, the heating is very smooth and the unit is basically silent in operation. We searched for one that was variable speed as we wanted it to be quiet. The rebate covered 80% of the cost, so the replacement was the same cost as a furnace.

Seth Klein, Vancouver

We installed our heat pump system a year ago and we’re very happy with it. We did it for climate reasons, wanting to reduce our household GHGs. But we also appreciate the other benefits – it feels healthier having the gas out of our home and the cooling on hot summer days is a real bonus. It felt very satisfying to turn off the gas line to our home.
